History and Activities of Vazhoor Block Panchayat

Vazhoor Block Panchayat is one of the Block Panchayats functioning as part of Kerala’s three-tier Panchayati Raj system of Local Self-Government Institutions. It was established to coordinate the development activities of the Gram Panchayats within its jurisdiction and to effectively implement various development and welfare schemes of the State and Central Governments.

The Vazhoor region has a rich and ancient historical heritage. In ancient times, the region formed part of the Thekkumkoor Kingdom. In AD 1749, Sree Padmanabha Dasa Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma, the Maharaja of Travancore, annexed the Thekkumkoor Kingdom to Travancore. Vazhoor is a region where human settlement has existed for more than a thousand years.

With the introduction of the Panchayati Raj system in Kerala, Vazhoor developed into an important centre of rural administration and development. Vazhoor Block Panchayat began its activities with a focus on rural development, agricultural advancement, poverty alleviation, housing, social welfare, and basic infrastructure development.

Gram Panchayats under Vazhoor Block Panchayat

At present, six Gram Panchayats come under the jurisdiction of Vazhoor Block Panchayat:

  1. Chirakkadavu Gram Panchayat
  2. Kangazha Gram Panchayat
  3. Karukachal Gram Panchayat
  4. Nedumkunnam Gram Panchayat
  5. Vazhoor Gram Panchayat
  6. Vellavoor Gram Panchayat

Vazhoor Block Panchayat has been playing a significant role in various sectors, including road development, housing schemes, sanitation, agricultural development, women’s empowerment, and livelihood development.

By giving due importance to people’s participation and adopting a vision of sustainable development, Vazhoor Block Panchayat has made significant contributions to the social and economic progress of the region. Through various initiatives that prioritize the needs and aspirations of the people, Vazhoor Block Panchayat continues to move forward towards achieving more inclusive, sustainable, and comprehensive development.
